France has a large number of famous surfing locations which are perfect for beginning and veteran surfers alike. While there are a few spots on the Mediterranean, the best surfing is typically found near Bordeaux along the western coast.
Beginners should check out La Cote de Basques. There’s usually plenty of waves for everyone and is a relatively easy area to access from Biarritz. Crowds aren’t impossible to overcome, but the beach is popular enough that more experienced surfers might want to look elsewhere.
One of the best beachbreaks in France is Plage de l’ocean. It’s great for both intermediates and experts. Beginners are likely to have a good time as well due to the lack of localism and hazards. once in a while the waves will be breaking a little close to shore, but that just makes skimboarding more appealing.
The tiny village of Mimizan Plage offers three meter waves. Car parking and crowds are of minimal concern, but do be aware that a map might be a good idea to determine the best access. Mimizan Plage also has a couple bars that are a great place to relax after wiping out one too many times.
Carcans-Plage is another great beachbreak that is suitable for those new to surfers. At first glance, it’ll look a little crowded, but if you’re willing to walk for a couple of minutes, empty waves can be found.
France has some of the best surfing in Europe. Beginners and intermediate-level surfers will enjoy it in the summer months. For more challenging waves, experts should schedule any surf vacations for autumn when the Atlantic coast gets a little rougher.
